![]() I originally expected many to be recolored variants but many are original for most of it. I think for me, my favorite part was the last cast of monsters you get to fight. The art and design is what I would except from an older game. The pixel art is amazing and it's really nice to see that each character has their own color identity. I wouldn't mind it being 1-2 hours long but overall the climb, although simple, was very enjoyable.Īs this game is a throwback to the earlier days, graphics are not it's strong suit compared to a modern game. I enjoyed this rather quick game at 7 hours for the first class and was long enough for what needed to be done. Overall I would say this is a decent game and what you except with a few twists from the original formula. It's great to see it once, but with the additional modes which I'll talk about in REPLAYABILITY, they get old. Where La-Mulana's main gimmick are the plethora of puzzles, this game is about the journey and the friends you make along the way. Boss combat in general is simple and reminds me of La-Mulana.The normal monster poll at around 80 is a decent set and works well enough for a castle this size. I wish there was more variety of mini bosses as there is only 4-5.That said I wish there was an item late game to enable dash on everyone since it's awkward to switch and then switch again to hit enemies. The trio also have additional movement items that further differentiate from each other which is nice to see. It's a decent mix and it is a simple combat system. His upgrades also match what happens in the earlier Castlevania games as well. Bram is basically a Belmont in color and combat gameplay. It is a good throwback to different protagonists in other games and there's also two addition ones that can be unlocked. Some of these are obvious by their looks and it was great to see that the ring is not needed but nice to have in ones that are very hard to see.Ĭombat is a mix of all the older games between Kyuli, the archer rogue that can reach the end of the screen but is slow, Arias, the fighter with a very short range but fast attack speed and Algus the strongest mix with a decent short range. ![]() While the game doesn't have a hint system, some items like the Dead Maiden's Ring enable you to see if there are hidden adjacent rooms. That's the constant theme of the game in a nutshell that you start with the most basic setup that's workable and many of the quality of life issues you've had, get resolved as you progress through the game. The other gimmick is that, it mixes in Trine elements, where each of the three protagonists have a unique combat and movement skill that forces you to use all of them.Įarly game, you are forced to switch at the base camp before exploring, but that changes later game. Due to this mechanic, the game enables you to unlock shortcuts so that in subsequent deaths you don't have to start from the very beginning. It's not a proper roguelite but adds a twist while still retaining a more traditional metrovania esque gameplay. ![]() This adds a small roguelite twist where you keep some things but lose mainly progress. The core gimmick of this game is that when you die you spawn in front of Epimetheus to buy upgrades your characters before spawning at the start of the tower. A platformer game with basic combat to boot. The gameplay is like many others in the same genre. Most of it will be the two unlocked characters and I will also use spoiler tags in this review if you don't want to be spoiled. There usually are elevators right next to the boss arena so dying there isn't as huge of an issue as one may expect. I've had the total of 20 deaths (mostly from arriving at the boss arena with low HP) and a few explorations late game but it wasn't a huge issue for me. This MAY impact how you view the game due to the mechanic that on death you respawn at the beginning of the castle. For those who have played the La Mulana series, this is a smaller, shorter, less puzzle-challenging game.ĭisclaimer: It seems that from watching Youtube reviewers, that some may have a lot more issues making progress and find it a lot more challenging. It's a good mix but the game leans more into exploration and discovery over combat. Astalon: Tears of the Earth is a throwback to older platformers with a twist of roguelite elements mixed in.
